Starting Solids at Six-Months

Jack’s six-month birthday rolled around and I decided it was time to start offering solids, in addition to breastfeeding of course.

He showed me he was ready by sitting up, showing interest in food, and being hungry all the time!

Plus, my pediatrician encouraged it.

I thought starting solids would be super easy …

Boy was I wrong, wrong, wrong!

New foods seem to frustrate the hell out of him.

I started with organic oatmeal cereal – that went okay I guess … super messy, but he seemed sort of into it.

Then I started offering other foods. Carrots, banana, applesauce, peas, sweet potato, and mango.

So far the sweet potato and peas are my only wins.

Little by little, day by day we’re making progress though.

Sometimes I feel like maybe he wasn’t quite ready – and had I waited a bit longer he’d be more receptive.

It’s something to think about before you make the decision for yourself.

Anyways – here are some tips:

Stick to stage 1 baby foods – they’re easy to digest and lower on the allergy scale.

You can use these lists as a starting point:

Fruits:

  • Apples
  • Avocados
  • Apricots
  • Bananas
  • Mango
  • Nectarines
  • Peaches
  • Papaya
  • Pears
  • Plums
  • Pumpkin

Veggies:

  • Green Beans
  • Carrots
  • Peas
  • Sweet Potato
  • Squash

Grains:

  • Rice
  • Oatmeal
  • Barley
